Facebook's parent company, Meta, is bringing Slack-like shortcuts to Messenger, allowing you to send a message silently or instantly summon a GIF while chatting with your pals.
According to Meta, two of the shortcuts are ready today, March 29th: @everyone and /silent allow you to notify everyone in a chat, which might be important if you want to make sure everyone is paying attention. (I beg you, on behalf of your friends' alerts, to use this one wisely.) According to Meta, if you wish to send a message without pinging the entire group, you can use the /silent shortcut.
There will be a couple more shortcuts in "the coming weeks." /pay will soon be available on iOS and Android in the United States, allowing you to transfer or request money directly from the Messenger chatbox. To view some potential alternatives to drop in the conversation, type /gif and a topic of something you want a GIF of. On iOS, this feature will be available soon. /shrug and /table flip, which will be available on iOS soon, will also allow you to ditch the traditional ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Without having to type them out yourself, you can use emoticons.
