If you didn't like the main YouTube app, there were plenty of alternatives to choose from. YouTube Vanced was one of them, a modified version of the original app that included features like ad blocking, background playback, and more without charging users like YouTube's Premium tier.
It's even in our list of the top indie applications available. It gained even more traction by restoring hate numbers in videos, which Google had deleted from their service. It's worth noting that we've been discussing the mod in the past tense. That's because we've come to pay our respects to YouTube Vanced.
The project's creators announced the app's demise on Sunday via the app's official Telegram channel and on the Vanced Twitter account. We can only surmise as to why it was killed off because no specific reason was offered, but it's likely owing to Google's legal department taking note of Vanced.
Recently, the tech giant has begun cracking down on unlicensed clients, such as Groovy and Rythm, two popular Discord bots for listening to music on a server. After YouTube filed cease and desist letters to the developers, they were taken down. It's not difficult to picture something similar occurring here.
YouTube Vanced has a devoted following thanks to its ease. Many Premium features, such as background playback and ad blocking, were unlocked or evaded by the program, and it also added features YouTube didn't like, such as those annoying hate counts. The app was recently renamed "Vanced," and most references to YouTube were deleted from its website, apparently in an attempt to avoid legal wrangling with Google.
Vance was never the sole YouTube alternative. Open-source NewPipe is another option, as it is lighter than the official program. However, YouTube Vanced had a sizable user base, which we will miss. It will no longer be updated, but you may still download the most recent version. But hurry, because the download links will expire soon.
