According to Deadline, Amazon is in discussions to adapt the PlayStation game God of War into a television series.
While neither Sony nor Amazon was able or willing to confirm the news outside of an official announcement, according to Deadline, the show will be overseen by "The Expanse creators/executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and The Wheel of Time executive producer/showrunner Rafe Judkins," with input from "Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, which collaborate on all TV series based on PlayStation games."
While there have been several God of War games produced over the previous 17 years, I'd expect any TV series based on the games in 2022 to take the most of its creative cues—at least in terms of appearance and tone—from the 2018 game and its planned sequel.
If it goes into production, the agreement will be the latest in a gold rush for video game-to-TV adaptations, which has already seen other PlayStation series like The Last Of Us (HBO) and Twisted Metal (also Amazon) scooped up, with the former already well and firmly underway, with filming beginning in 2021.
There's also Amazon's Mass Effect, Netflix's Resident Evil, and Amazon's Fallout, not to mention Paramount's massive Halo series, which premieres later this month. And that's just in terms of television series! The Uncharted movie was released last month, and Netflix is planning a BioShock feature for the future.
It's easy to see why production firms and movie/TV studios are so interested in video games right now. Adaptations may be safe money since they appeal to a built-in public, as novels and, more lately, comic books have proved, and many of these video games either have large fanbases or have constructed their own unique, engaging narrative that is appropriate for the small screen. The popularity of The Witcher on Netflix, which, let's be honest, is receiving a lot more mythology from The Witcher 3 than the book series, has undoubtedly aided.
